Don't judge. It's just math.
The simple elegance of a rules based expert system was completely lost on me at the time. Long before I found and fairly understood the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence, my efforts were being stalled by a looming and obvious problem. There was simply not enough time to physically write all of these programs in my head. I couldn't quite put my mind around a software program capable of writing itself with its own observational feedback loop. Someone out there had to be thinking along these lines. I just needed to find them.
At the height of my confusion (and being too stubborn to give up with a more simplified and stable hard code), I found my solution in a very old book. A book relegated to the free bin outside a second hand book store in Knoxville, Tennessee.
I was pleased to learn that I was not the first person on Earth to have such thoughts, and humbled to be fifty years late to the party.

Looking At Something... Changes It.
Artist Peter Smolenski and I created a lighthearted explanation on the subject of Werner Heisenberg and his uncertainty principle. It only takes twelve minutes to watch and eight minutes to apologize for what you have just witnessed. Comes with its own Fair Use Disclaimer, since we were guided by a profusion of talented sources to make this simple point from our own artistic perspective.
